Complaints About an Appliance Repair or Warranty in California
Where to go when a repair goes wrong, from official agency pages checked October 31 and November 1, 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
First step
Contact the shop or company in writing. Describe the problem, the dates and what you want, and include copies of receipts, quotes and warranties. Keep the originals.
State routes
- The Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS) takes complaints about the businesses it licenses, including appliance service dealers. It suggests contacting the business first, in writing, with copies of receipts or warranties. (Bureau of Household Goods and Services: File a Complaint)
- BHGS reviews each complaint to see if it has authority. A refund, repair or replacement is not guaranteed; BHGS cannot force a business to settle a dispute or issue a refund. (Bureau of Household Goods and Services: File a Complaint)
- For home warranties or product insurance, BHGS points to the California Department of Insurance. (Bureau of Household Goods and Services: File a Complaint)
- The California Attorney General takes consumer complaints against a business online or by mail. (California Attorney General: Consumer Complaint Against a Business/Company)
- Check a shop's license with the DCA License Search. (California Department of Consumer Affairs: DCA License Search)
